Classification: Lateral Sheriff’s Deputy Salary Information: Commensurate with experience. Hired at appropriate base salary range from $5,629 (step two) per month to $7,033 per month. Education incentives, longevity pay and premium pay apply depending upon assignment. We are a full-service law enforcement agency for unincorporated King County, 12 cities and towns, the local and regional transit systems and the King County Airport. KCSO has four divisions: Field Operations (all uniformed patrol functions), Special Operations (SWAT, K9, Marine Unit, Helicopters, Search & Rescue), Criminal Investigations (detective positions investigating a wide variety of crimes) and Technical Services (911 call center, computer services). Deputies may choose from a variety of work environments ranging from urban to suburban and rural. Commissioned deputies assigned to patrol work eight hour shifts on a 5-2, 5-3 schedule. City/County/Area Information: Located on Puget Sound in Washington State, and covering 2,134 square miles, King County is nearly twice as large as the average county in the United States. With more than 1.8 million people, it also ranks as the 14th most populous county in the nation. King County (and the county seat, Seattle) is home to four professional sports teams, several concert and theater venues, ten colleges and universities, Starbucks, Boeing, 25,000 acres of parks and 175 miles of trails. Selection Procedure: All interested applicants must first sign-up and complete the written and physical tests administered by NTN (http://www.nationaltestingnetwork.com). Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 65% on the NTN video and 70% on the reading test. The report writing score is pass/fail, as is the physical test. This Physical Agility Test includes: a mile and a half run, a 300m sprint, push-ups and sit-ups (minimum 160 points needed for a passing score). Those who pass this initial phase will be contacted by the King County Sheriff’s Office to participate in an examination process consisting of the following: ORAL BOARD: Qualified applicants will be invited to an oral scored examination to evaluate their experience, education, and personal preparation for the position. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Candidates who are successful in the examination process will be subjected to a comprehensive background investigation. POLYGRAPH: Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation will be required to take and pass a polygraph test. MEDICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS: Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation and are conditionally offered a position would be required to successfully complete a required extensive medical and psychological examination prior to appointment as a Deputy. NOTE: Candidates must pass all phases of the testing process to be further considered. Job Requirements US Citizen: Yes (at the time of application) Valid Washington Driver’s License at time of hire; Ability to Read/Speak English; Vision: Normal color vision (based on the Ishihara standard range of normal color vision as determined by the medical exam) Uncorrected vision of 20/100 or better, correctable to 20/30 with the use of glasses, hard contact lenses or soft contacts you have worn for less than one year OR Corrected vision to 20/30 or better with soft contact lenses you have worn for at least one year (in this case there is no uncorrected vision standard) OR Uncorrected vision of 20/30 or better. College: None; Academy Certification: Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certification Required; Multiple Scores from Same Applicant: We consider the highest score received within the past one year. To be considered for Lateral Entry, you must meet the following criteria, in addition to the basic qualifications: Experience as a full time commissioned police officer with at least 12 months of active patrol; Successful completion of probation as a commissioned officer with a city, county or state police or sheriff's department; Less than a two-year break in service from a former police officer position; and Academy training that meets or exceeds the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center's standards (most state-run academies qualify).
