Marshals currently work at any of the following: King County Courthouse, Youth Services Center, Harborview Mental Health Court, Regional Justice Center (Kent), Office of Public Defender and the King County Veteran's Program.

Special Requirements
King County - County Marshals are specially commissioned employees who ensure safety in King County courthouses and other county buildings. They assist the weapons screeners at the Courthouse entrances, respond to calls for assistance in courtrooms, provide safety escorts in problematic situations, and arrest people when necessary. They have full powers of arrest while on duty. Job duties include:
• Observing courtroom proceedings and intervening to prevent escalation of problem situations.
• Respond to all types of calls for assistance in an assigned facility.
• Perform walk-through or hand-held security scanning and hand searches at various building sites or courtrooms; and confiscate illegal items or refuse entry when warranted.
• Monitor, assist and oversee Security Screeners to ensure that screening of the public is done in a professional manner.
• Patrol courtrooms, buildings and other areas to discourage unacceptable and unlawful behavior in and around assigned areas.
• Remove, restrain or physically arrest individuals who may be loitering or disturbing the peace, or who have no lawful business to conduct in the building or surrounding areas. Use of force may be required.
• Respond to fire alarms, bomb threats and other safety concerns; and assist with building evacuations.
• Provide information, direction and assistance to the public at assigned facility.
• Provide safety escorts and assist other law enforcement agencies as needed.

Job Requirements

Age 21 at date of hire.

Education High School Grad/GED

Experience No more than a 3 year break in service.

Additional Requirement :
County Marshal candidates will take the County Marshal Physical Abilities Test (PAT). This is a separate test from the standard Law Enforcement PAT.

Special Qualifications

Must have graduated from a certified law enforcement academy that meets or exceeds Washington State standards, and currently possess, or be able to obtain a valid Washington State Peace Officer Certificate.
Must have A at least 2 years of recent work experience as a full-time commissioned police officer (recent means within the last 3 years) OR
Must have 4 years of continuous service and currently serving as a reserve police officer with qualification standards and work duties similar to the King County Sheriff’s Office.
Out-of-state hires must complete a 2-week equivalency academy within the first year of employment.
Good verbal skills and obvious experience defusing interpersonal conflicts and maintaining orderly conduct in public group situations.
Able to qualify with a KCSO-issued firearm at least twice a year.
Able to successfully pass a written and physical exam and a complete background investigation to include a polygraph exam, psychological evaluation and a medical exam.

Prior Experience

US Citizen;

Valid WASHINGTON State Driver's License: Valid Washington Driver’s License at time of hire.

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

Vision: Normal color vision (based on the Ishihara standard range of normal color vision as determined by the medical exam)

Uncorrected vision of 20/100 or better, correctable to 20/30 with the use of glasses, hard contact lenses or soft contacts you have worn for less than one year OR

Corrected vision to 20/30 or better with soft contact lenses you have worn for at least one year (in this case there is no uncorrected vision standard) OR

Uncorrected vision of 20/30 or better.

College:
None

Prior Experience:
No more than a 3 year break in service from last law enforcement employment.

Academy Certification:
Graduation from a certified law enforcement academy that meets or exceeds the Washington State standards AND two years work experience as a full time commissioned police officer OR four years of continuous experience as an active reserve police officer with qualifications standards and work duties similar to the King County Sheriff's Office.

Entry Level Salary: $28.12 hourly
