Job Description

Park Rangers are involved in law enforcement, visitor services, interpretive programs, resource and wildlife protection, safety enforcement, pollution control, habitat improvement, planning and development, public relations, fee collection, and related duties for the County Regional Parks System.

Park Rangers assist the public in the use of recreation facilities, protect the parks and their natural resources, and patrol the parks to ensure public safety. Park Rangers carry firearms and have the authority and responsibilities of peace officers. Under direction, they may be assigned lead-work responsibility over one or more Park Ranger Assistants and/or Park Maintenance Aides.

    Possession of a State of California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Certificate, or satisfactory completion of a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy, or successful completion of P.O.S.T. Basic Academy within 12 months of appointment

    ~ AND ~


      a. Completion of all major coursework required for an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or an Associate of Science (A.S.) Degree in natural resources management or completion of a minimum of 12 semester or 18 quarter units at an accredited college or university in park administration, forestry, recreation administration, natural resource, criminal justice, or a field that is closely related to the intent of the class.
      b. Two years of full-time paid or volunteer experience in natural resource management, park administration, forestry, recreation administration, criminal justice, or a field closely related to the intent of the class. (Completion of the above specified education and two years of experience performing duties of Recreation Technician or Park Maintenance Worker II, or a higher class in either class series in Sacramento County service, meets this requirement). (Note: 173.6 hours = 21.7 work days = 1 work month.)

    Nine months of full-time experience performing the duties of a Park Ranger Assistant in Sacramento County service..

    Completion of all major coursework from an accredited four-year college or university required for a Bachelor's Degree or higher, in park administration, forestry, recreation administration, natural resource management, criminal justice, or a closely related field.

    Entry Level Salary: $3,967   monthly
    Top Pay: $4,823   monthly
