The starting salary for Lateral Patrol Officer is $28.038 per hour.
To qualify as a Lateral Officer you must be certified as a Police Officer in Alaska or another state in good standing.
You must have 24 months of continuous employment with a police agency as a full time police officer within the past 36 months.
Patrol Officers work 12 hours per day for fourteen days straight.
They are then off for fourteen days straight.
This is commonly referred to as “2 weeks on – 2 weeks off”.
We work under the FLSA 7(k) exemption.
A regular work period is 84 hours.
Overtime is paid at time and a half when work is performed over 86 hours in a work period.
For a regular work period with no holiday or overtime, an officer working at $28.03 an hour will gross $2,355.19 before any deductions (Federal Withholding Tax, Medicare, AK Unemployment (ESC), and retirement (PERS).
This is $61,234.94 gross per year.
City benefits provide 12 holidays per year. (You get one extra holiday for your birthday after your first full year of employment.) Example: 12 holidays/year x 12 hours/day = 144 hours at $28.038/hour = $4,037.47/ year.
Employees earn 8.62 hours of leave every pay period for the first two years of continuous service.
That’s 224.12 hours or 18.68 days per year. Employees will be on probation with the City for 90 days before you’re eligible to use your health/leave benefits, but they are retroactive after the 90 days.
Employees will be on one year probation with the police department, which is a State requirement before employees can be certified as a Police Officer with the State of Alaska. We will provide uniforms and equipment (except your duty boots). The City pays for your health/dental insurance. Dependent health/dental insurance is not paid by the City, but is available at the employee expense. Costs for dependent coverage can be provided upon request. The City does not pay into Social Security, and if you choose to reside in Alaska you will pay no state income tax. The City contributes to the State of Alaska Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). This is Tier 4 and is not a defined benefit (Basically a 401K) where the Employee pays 8% of wages earned into PERS, and there is an employer contribution.

Airfare from Anchorage to Kotzebue with at least 14 days advance notice currently ranges from $330.00 to $404.00 round trip using www.alaskaair.com. Once employed subsequent travel is the employee’s responsibility. The Department has a ‘courtesy officer’ plan with a local housing corporation. This allows police officers to have an apartment at 50% reduced rental rate when housing is available. The monthly rent depends on size of apartment and number of roommates, but ranges from $600 to $1,000.
