Job Description

Police officers assist the Grand Rapids community by protecting life and property, enforcing the law, and working with citizens to address neighborhood problems related to crime and disorder.

Patrols a designated area of the city on foot, bicycle, and/or in a patrol car to detect and deter criminal activity, disorderly conduct and traffic violations. Preserve the peace at public gatherings and neighborhood disputes.

Responds to calls for service relating to traffic incidents, domestic disputes, reports of criminal activity, lost or missing persons, public services duties, citizen assistance or other incidents and taking the appropriate action. Communicates important information to fellow officers, dispatchers and other agencies via radio, computer and other methods while responding to calls for service.

Pursues, apprehends and arrests criminal offenders. Uses physical force, handcuffs and other restraints in accordance with department policy.

Conducts prisoner transfers and processing which may include searches of persons, assisting in the execution of judicial warrants for seizure of blood or other body fluids, and removal of personal possessions for safety or evidentiary purposes.

Performs lawful searches of people, vehicles, buildings and other personal property. Seizes and processes evidence in accordance with departmental policy. Serves criminal warrants.

Enforces criminal law, local ordinances, and traffic regulations by issuing traffic or misdemeanor citations, verbal warnings, or taking the offender into custody.

Provides rescue functions and assistance to other agencies at accidents, emergencies and disasters, administering medical first-aid when necessary.

Conducts a thorough investigation of all criminal offenses and other incidents within area of assignment and scope of authority. Interviews complaints, suspects and witnesses to criminal activity.

Completes all required reports and forms relating to accidents, criminal offenses and other incidents.

Testifies in criminal, civil, or administrative court cases when required.

Applicants for employment with the City of Grand Rapids as a Police Officer must successfully complete the selection process as outlined below. Candidates must qualify in each step of the process in order to proceed to the next step.

1. Meet all basic qualifications which include:

• Citizen of the United States
• Minimum Age of Eighteen (18)
• Proof of High School graduation or a General Educational Development (GED) Certificate
• Possession of a Valid State of Michigan Driver's License
• Be licensed or eligible for licensing by MCOLES as of November 21, 2014
• Meet all MCOLES Standards, including good moral character as defined by MCOLES standards, 20/20 corrected vision in both eyes and the absence of color blindness.

2. Complete the online application and attach it to the Police Officer job posting on the City of Grand Rapids website at www.grcity.us/humanresources and submit to the Human Resources Department as directed via NEOGOV to be eligible for consideration.  THE FINAL GROUP OF APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICE BY 11:59 PM ON July 25, 2014 TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.  

3. MUST HAVE TAKEN AND RECEIVED A PASSING SCORE FROM THE EMPCO POLICE OFFICER LICENSING EXAM BY July 25, 2014.  RESULTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE GRAND RAPIDS HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICE BY July 28, 2014.  FOR AVAILABLE TEST DATES AND LOCATIONS, CONTACT EMPCO @ WWW.EMPCO.NET.  NOTE:   THERE IS A $75.00 ADMINISTRATION FEE FROM EMPCO FOR TAKING THIS EXAMINATION.  SEE THE EMPCO WEBSITE FOR COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS.    There is one EMPCO exam scheduled for Tuesday July 22, 2014 on the GRCC Campus.  Please follow the EMPCO website and the GRPD website for updated listings of other EMPCO exams that maybe scheduled in the Grand Rapids area before the July 25, 2014 deadline.   ****However DO NOT delay and hold out for additional tests to be scheduled.  If you see a date that works for you, please make every effort to secure this credential!  (If you have previously passed the EMPCO examination and have a test score that is less than 1 year old (from July 25, 2014) be sure to answer the supplemental question below.

4.  Log into your EMPCO profile and be certain that your EMPCO profile is available to GRPD for scores and information.  If you have difficulty with this please contact EMPCO for technical assistance.  
 
5. Applicants meeting the above pre-requisite qualifications must attend a Recruiting and Informational meeting to be scheduled at the Grand Rapids Police Department on August 12 and August 14, 2014.  NOTICE OF AVAILABLE DATES AND TIMES WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU AS AN INVITATION.

6. Applicants attending the meeting will receive instructions on how to complete the Background Questionnaire which MUST be thoroughly completed and returned to the Police Department Training Bureau within 7 days.  Deadlines for returning the packet will be announced at the Meeting and strictly adhered to.

7. Pass Administrative Review of Background Questionnaire.

8. Pass the City of Grand Rapids oral board examination.

9. *Pass the Personal History (Background) Investigation conducted by the City of Grand Rapids Police Department.

10. *Pass an evaluation of physical and mental health conducted by City-designated, qualified medical/psychological persons.

OUT OF STATE CERTIFIED OFFICERS: Please contact the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) at (517)322-1417 to determine your eligibility and available dates for the Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Program.  This program MUST be completed prior to November 21, 2014. ***NOTE:  THE EMPCO TEST MUST ALSO BE COMPLETED BY JULY 25, 2014***
