Job Description

The following duty statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the position and do not include other non-essential or marginal duties that may be required. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reserves the right to modify or change the duties of essential functions of this position at any time.


Patrol Deputies shall be responsible for the daily enforcement of Colorado Statutes and Lake County Ordinances.  Deputies shall maintain a proactive approach to enforcement.  Deputies are responsible for the daily reports and shall ensure reports are complete, accurate and prepared for distribution to the Court, Clerks and D.A.  Meet the contractual obligations with Federal agencies (USFS, BOR, BLM) and State of Colorado Probation (Substance abuse testing).  Shift work in the jail is also required periodically.  


Lake County Deputys perform many duties, from sitting long periods of time in a patrol vehicle, to standing or walking for long periods of time. Duties require working in adverse conditions, including rain, sleet, hail and snow and under extreme time constraints. Time management is essential for reports, training, patrol and meetings. Deputies generally work alone or with minimal guidance or supervision. Patrol Deputies must be self motivated and display a good sense of self initiative. Sound judgment is required as Deputies are expected to provide guidance citizens and make immediate decisions up to and including using deadly force during critical incidents. Shift work is mandatory which include nights, weekends, holidays and 12 hours shifts.

Testing process:    

General written exam; Oral Board; Physical ability exam; Psychological exam; Polygraph exam selected by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and final Sheriff’s interview.

It is the goal of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to provide continuous training to all members; some training is physical in nature. Lake County Deputies must maintain a sufficient level of physical fitness to perform the essential functions of their jobs.

Physical demands:

A Lake County Deputy must participate in quarterly firearms training and not less than 40 hours of arrest control training annually. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office requires that each Deputy be capable of employing the PPCT Arrest Control method, which includes gross and fine motor skills, kicks, strikes, pressure points, joint locks and handcuffing.

Physical exam performed by the department’s physician consists of, but is not limited to, the following examinations:

 -Urine Drug Screen

-Height & Weight

-Vision Screening

-Hearing Screening

-Postural Evaluation

-Upper and Lower Body Orthopedic Screen

-Grip Strength Analysis

-Balance Testing

 -3-Minute Step Test

*Note: Additional testing may be required based on results of the physical evaluation and physicians’ examination

    *LATERAL position MUST have TWO years prior law enforcement experience within past 12 months.  

    Minimum requirements to apply:

    CURRENT Colorado POST certification, possess & maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license, clean criminal & driver’s record, pass all required examinations within the testing process, able to pass department firearms qualification, TASER qualifiction and arrest control & defense (PPCT) program.
