Job Description

The police chief performs a variety of complex supervisory, administrative and professional work in planning, organizing, directing, and management of police department operations.  This is accomplished using strong interpersonal and leadership skills along with an emphasis on community policing concepts.  The police chief is a member of the city’s management team.

Residency Requirements:  The City Council is reviewing the current policy to require the chief to live inside the city.

  • Experience 7 yrs LE experience, 3 yrs as sgt or above

    Required Education and Experience: Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major emphasis in Police Science, Administration of Justice or a related field, and a minimum of seven (7) years of experience in police work, three years of which must have been equivalent to Police Sergeant or higher. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Completion of the Washington Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy, or the ability to obtain certification in the State of Washington, is mandatory.

     

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations; skill in the use of the common law enforcement tools and equipment.  Skill and familiarity in the use of modern technology is imperative.

    Ability to train and supervise subordinate personnel; ability to perform work requiring good physical condition; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors; ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; ability to give verbal and written instructions, and ability to manage a budget.
