Job Description

The City of Gaithersburg, Maryland, is seeking certified police officers and entry-level candidates (no previous law enforcement experience) to join its nationally accredited Police Department.

The Gaithersburg Police Department provides law enforcement-related services to more than 64,000 residents; responsibility is shared with the Montgomery County (MD) Department of Police.  City officers respond to calls for service as necessary and utilize partnerships to solve problems and to deal with issues affecting the safety and quality of life in all City neighborhoods.

This recruitment period will establish a standing eligibility list for future Department vacancies; positions are filled based on operational needs.  The selection process may take up to 6 months to complete.  Individuals with prior experience as a police officer may be given preference.

Additional Information

Starting salary for entry-level candidates is $54,593.  Starting salary for certified Police Officers is $54,593 to $63,137 based on prior police experience.  Lateral hires are eligible for a $2,000 bonus upon satisfactory completion of the two-year probationary period.

Four-day workweek; 10-hour patrol shifts.  Excellent benefits and opportunities including medical, dental, vision, long-term care, long-term disability, and life insurance; paid holiday, vacation, sick, and personal leave; generous retirement plans (combined total annual contribution equivalent to 26% of base salary - 10% employee and 16% employer - into 401A/401K/457 Plans); multilingual skills pay ($2,080 annually) disbursed in a lump sum; and take home vehicle program.

Job Requirements

  • Education High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Experience Certified Officers or Entry Level (no experience)
  • Additional Requirement :

    Must be a U.S. citizen; possess a valid driver's license and have a good overall driving record; be in excellent physical and mental condition as determined by a comprehensive examination; have at least 30 college credits or life experience equivalent to 30 college credits (Associate's Degree or higher preferred); not have been convicted of a felony or be a current user of illegal drugs; and be certified/certifiable by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission based on State of Maryland regulations.
