Job Description

Demonstrate successful engagement of the community oriented policing philosophy.Provides for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations.Must be committed to and demonstrate effective drug interdiction throughout the county.Be knowledgeable of vehicle searches and seizures in reference to drugs and contraband. Identifies, pursues, and arrests suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.Be on call and available for call out.Maintains proper control of assigned canine at all times.Ensures canine is used only to perform operations which it has been trained and certified to do.Maintains deployment and training records for the canine.Provides appropriate daily care, feeding, grooming, and exercise.Provides appropriate veterinary care for the canine including keeping yearly vaccinations up to date.Provides the canine with general medical attention (Monthly flea/tick preventative and heart worm preventative).Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting assigned canine vehicle.Responsible for having scheduled maintenance performed on assigned canine vehicle.Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting the kennel and/or yard area canine is housed.Maintains all equipment assigned for care, control, and training of their canine.Testifies in court to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases.The ability to communicate effectively and efficiently both orally and in writing.Effectively relates with the general public and representatives of other law enforcement agencies in coordinating activities and resolving problems.Subject to providing patrol shift coverage or supplemental patrol surge staffing and being dispatched to calls for service;Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information

The Rains County Sheriff's Office covers 259 square miles which include the City of Point, Alba, East Tawakoni, Lone Oak and Emory as the seat of the county. In this county there are two lakes: Lake Tawakoni and Lake Fork which is a popular fishing destination that attracts tourists year around for fishing tournaments and seasonal gatherings like concerts and entertainment events. The Rains County Sheriff's office consists of six to eight deputies, two investigators, the Chief Deputy, and is over seen by Sheriff David Traylor. Our deputies drive fully equipped 2013 Ford Explorers, use Copsync software in the vehicles, and Vidtac in car camera systems/body mics. Tasers are provided to those who are certified. Deputies work twelve hour shifts (6:00am-6:00pm) with every other weekend off. The K9 handler will be expected to work the same schedule and hours, but will float the shifts (e.g. 3:00pm-3:00am).

  • Education High School Diploma, TCOLE Certified, Certified Canine Handler
  • Experience Peace Officer
  • Additional Requirement :

    Required Qualifications:  

    High School diploma or GED and be at least 21 years of age. Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation and a psychological examination. This position is subject to pre-employment/ random drug testing. Types of equipment used include a police vehicle, 2-way radio, computer, lethal and non-lethal weapons, and restraint devices. Employee must be proficient in the operation of all of the above mentioned equipment.

    Desired Qualifications:  

    Applicants with 1 year prior K-9 Handler experience, AND 2 years sworn law enforcement experience will be given preference.
