London police using terminals to collect cellphone data

Purpose-built terminals in police stations produce a printout of data, save a digital record

LONDON — London's Metropolitan Police have begun extracting cellphone data from suspects held in custody, a move critics say is a "possible breach of human rights law."

The data being recovered includes call history, texts and contacts, and will be retained whether or not any charges are brought against suspects, the BBC reported Thursday.
