SOUTH BOSTON — Investigators have identified the woman killed in a collision with a police cruiser in South Boston on Saturday as Ann Marie McNally, who was 36.

The Suffolk district attorney's office said a Boston police officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call about a fellow officer in trouble in South Boston when the cruiser struck the rear of a Saab at the intersection of West Broadway and D Street. The cruiser had its lights and siren on, the office said.

A family neighbor in Braintree, Paul Curran, said McNally visited her family's home on Mount Vernon Street often and was most recently living in South Boston.

"It's a tragedy what happened to their family," Curran said yesterday in a telephone interview.

McNally was single, Curran said.

A State Police collision reconstruction team was investigating the crash, which happened just before 1 p.m.

Boston police said the officer was treated at an area hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
