BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. A Broward County sheriff's deputy was in grave condition Monday afternoon after he was shot in the head during a traffic stop in Pembroke Park.

The deputy's name was not available. The suspected shooter was under arrest.

Veda Coleman-Wright, spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's Office, said the deputy pulled over a motorcyclist on Pembroke Road near 40th Avenue, close to where unincorporated Broward County meets the city of Hollywood. It was about noon.

According to Coleman-Wright, the motorcyclist ran, turned around and fired at the deputy, hitting the deputy in the head. He was rushed to the hospital in ''very critical condition,'' the spokeswoman said.

The shooter fled to the nearby Hillcrest neighborhood, where he was arrested in Building 23 of the Condominiums of Hillcrest, 4330 Hillcrest Dr.

The alleged shooter is in his mid-20s, said Hollywood police Capt. Tony Rode.

''Our officers found the red shirt he was reportedly wearing at the time of the shooting and the holster to his gun,'' Rode said.

Coleman-Wright said the deputy has a brother who is a police officer in Hallandale Beach.

Police had not yet recovered the weapon used in the shooting, Rode said.

Rode said the suspect was being held at the Hollywood police station and will be turned over to BSO.

The shooting aftermath drew a massive police presence to the scene, a busy stretch of Pembroke Road. The road was being blocked, and traffic was diverted.

Sheriff Ken Jenne, along with dozens of deputies, converged on Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where the victim was taken for treatment.
