Man charged with officer's death at hotel

Man accused of shooting Memphis Police Officer Timothy Warren planned to kill more officers

By PoliceOne Staff

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been charged in the shooting death of Memphis Police Officer Timothy Warren.

Warren had been responding to a domestic violence call at a hotel in the city on Sunday when he was fatally shot along with another man at the scene.

Alexander Haydel, 22, is charged with two counts of first degree murder, and according to a police affidavit, used Army infantry tactics in a plan to kill more police officers, the Commercial Appeal reported.

The military tactics included going up a flight of stairs to gain "higher ground" and blowing up two fire extinguishers near the downed officer -- an attempt to take advantage of officers' concern for their fallen comrade, according to police.

Haydel took a firearm and two fully loaded magazines from Warren after shooting him, which he allegedly told investigators was part of the plan to shoot more officers, according to investigators.

Haydel will appear in court on both first degree murder charges.
