Safariland™ First to Introduce Multi-Threat Body Armor Under NIJ STANDARD-0101.06

JACKSONVILLE, Florida – Safariland, a BAE Systems line of business, announced today that it is the first body armor manufacturer to receive approval for a multi-threat armor model under the National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) new Voluntary Body Armor Compliance Testing Program under NIJ Standard-0101.06 (NIJ-06).

Safariland’s Multi-Flex™ Series of concealable armor features combined ballistic and spike protection. The ballistic protection is tested under the new NIJ Standard-0101.06, while the spike protection is tested under the NIJ Standard-0115.00. The MT-330 Type IIIA/Spike 3 (#MS-3A30S-MT01) model is the first multi-threat armor model determined by the NIJ to comply with the new NIJ-06 standard, and is the first of Safariland’s Multi-Flex™ Series. Built specifically for the law enforcement and corrections markets, it is now available for immediate purchase.

The NIJ introduced the Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor NIJ Standard-0101.06 to establish minimum performance requirements and test methods for the ballistic resistance of personal body armor in order to improve performance so that officers receive adequate protection against those ballistic threats likely faced over the next decade. According to the new NIJ-06 standard, body armor must now be able to defend against increased velocities of ammunition calibers to better reflect current street threats and law enforcement duty weapons. Likewise, the NIJ Standard-0115.00, Stab Resistance of Personal Body Armor specifies the minimum performance requirements for body armor that is resistant to attack by typical pointed and edged weapons. Both standards are critical to improving the life-protecting equipment being used by law enforcement today.

“As industry innovators we have once again taken the lead by providing law enforcement officers with the solutions they need to perform at their highest – and safest – levels on a daily basis,” said Safariland President Scott O’Brien. “Our research and development efforts have yielded an array of options for ballistic armor and now multi-threat concealable armor. I am proud of the advances we continue to make in our effort to save lives.”

Safariland’s new NIJ-06 body armor models include its Xtreme® Series of concealable body armor and its Multi-Flex™ Series of multi-threat body armor. Both series set a new industry benchmark by combining breakthrough technologies – such as Geometrics™ and proprietary framing -- with advanced ballistic materials.

Safariland’s newest line of concealable armor, the Multi-Flex™ Series, includes the:

MT-330 Type IIIA/Spike 3: Tested against the .357 Sig & .44 mag. threats, as well as against a spike instrument at 43 Joules (31.7 ft-lb), the MT-330 offers combined ballistic and spike protection.

For ballistic-only concealable body armor, Safariland’s Xtreme® Series of NIJ-06 body armor includes the following models:

XT-700 Type II – Tested against the 9mm & .357 mag. threats, this model provides advanced ballistic protection in a lightweight, hybrid design.

XT-300 Type IIA – Tested against the 9mm & .40 cal. threats, this model provides optimum ballistic performance in a robust design.

XT-300 Type II - Tested against the 9mm & .357 mag. threats, this model provides optimum ballistic performance in a robust design.

XT-300 Type IIIA – Tested against the .357 Sig & .44 mag. threats, this model provides optimum ballistic performance in a robust design.

With the introduction of these new NIJ-06 body armor models, Safariland continues its tradition of excellence in protecting law enforcement officers.  Recently restructured to incorporate all of its previously independent operating brands, the company is united under one name - Safariland.  Together, Safariland’s body armor models combine the heritage and expertise of American Body Armor®, PROTECH®, SAVVY®, Safariland Armorwear™ and Second Chance®. In doing so, Safariland offers the most comprehensive line of body armor available in the industry. Safariland’s NIJ-06 body armor provides law enforcement officers with enhanced performance, durability, comfort and value, which deliver on the company’s motto: Together, We Save Lives™.
