Cop wearing vest survives shooting

Newsday

A police officer shot last night in Brownsville may have survived because he was wearing a bullet-proof vest, EMS officials said.

The officer, who was not identified, was shot at about 11 p.m. at or around 1590 East New York Ave., said Jack Thompson, an Emergency Medical Services spokesman.

The officer was stable at the scene and taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where his condition was not immediately known. His injuries, however, did not appear to be life-threatening, Thompson said. It was unclear where or how many times the officer was shot.

Police could not immediately confirm any information about the shooting last night. "Looks like it might have saved his life," Thompson said of the vest.

The shooting marks the first time an officer has been shot since May, when a Brooklyn officer was also saved by a vest. In all, four police officers have been shot this year. In March, two undercover officers were fatally shot on Staten Island when a gun buy went tragically wrong.
