Oklahoma’s Centennial Badges Provided by SymbolArts

Showing Honor to its Historical 100th Birthday

This year the State of Oklahoma is celebrating their Centennial anniversary. To honor the states 100th birthday, the Oklahoma Centennial Commission awarded rights to SymbolArts to produce the badges for this special celebration. Each department that ordered centennial badges, were able to create a custom designed badge, making each design unique to the individual departments.

Oklahoma’s statehood in 1907 is also a significant year for Creek County Sheriff, Steve Toliver. This being the same year the office of Creek County Sheriff officially began. Sharing the states 100th birthday made the centennial badge very unique for this department. A committee of Creek County Deputies was formed to create ideas for the design, and then it was voted on by all members of the sheriff’s office.

History has definitely played a significant role in some of the departments badge designs, and was the focal point for the Tulsa County Sheriff’s office. The gold, six-pointed star was chosen because it is reminiscent of territorial Marshals’ badges, which were usually carved from silver coins or cut from tin-can lids.  According to their legend, the six-pointed star represents good versus evil, the triangle pointing up for good and the triangle pointing down for evil.

Each department also designed the center seal of their badge. The Purcell Police Department’s centennial badge was designed by Purcell Patrolman II Scott Stephens. He chose to include the Oklahoma’s Centennial logo for the center seal. Stephens said he got this idea while in Utah for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Other departments chose to include the state seal and their city seal.

SymbolArts was honored to participate in this historical event, and assisting each department to make their badge unique in design to honor its 100th birthday. If your department has an upcoming celebration such as this, we would be privileged to participate and help your department make the event a memorable one.
