Deaflympics Come To Salt Lake City
"The 16th Winter Deaflympics, to be held in Salt Lake City USA February 1-10, 2007, will offer competition featuring the world's best deaf athletes. The Deaflympics, founded in 1924, is the second oldest international multi-cultural sports event in the world, surpassed only by the Olympic Games which were founded in 1894."
For the first time in their history, the Deaflympics, the Olympics, and the Paralympics, will have been held in the same city utilizing some of the same venues. These world-class athletes will be receiving medals custom created by SymbolArts. The medals will be the traditional Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each medal incorporates both the flame logo of the Salt Lake Deaflympics on the front side and the multi-hand logo of the International Committee on Sports of the Deaf (ICSD) on the other. "The hand shapes, 'ok', 'good', and 'great' that overlap each other in a circle, represent the original sign for 'Deaflympics'. Together, the hand shapes represent the sign for 'united'." There will additionally be another 500 medals produced that will be custom framed and sold to raise funds to support the 16th Winter Deaflympics.
