Officer shoots knife-wielding burglar

The Associated Press

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A 25-year-old man admits he tried to attack an upstate New York police officer with a knife during a foiled burglary.

Michael Allen of Syracuse pleaded guilty in Onondaga County Court to charges of burglary, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and menacing a police officer. Judge Anthony Aloi promised Allen a sentence of no more than six years in prison. Sentencing was set Tuesday for May 23.

Allen was shot and wounded by Syracuse Police Officer Arthur Williams in January when he refused to drop a knife he was holding. Police had caught Allen breaking into a home. Williams said he ordered Allen to drop the knife three times. When Allen rushed forward, Williams fired five shots, hitting Allen once in the arm. Williams was unharmed.
