Policies and procedures at departments regarding the use of weapon mounted lights differ significantly at departments across the country. Many departments have been stuggling with the issues surrounding the use of weapons mounted lights. The following exerpt is from a 2004 PoliceOne Duty Gear survey and helps shed some light on what departments and officers are doing:
1. Does your department allow the use of handgun mounted lights for duty?
7.2% - They are issued by the department 40.6% - Yes, but the officer must purchase them individually 52.1% - No, handgun mounted lights are not allowed
2. If you use a Handgun Mounted light, what type of holster do you wear?
58.86% - I use a standard holster and take off and store the light in a separate pouch 41.14% - I use a holster that allows the light to remain on the handgun
3. If you use a Handgun Mounted light, what brand of light do you use?
Streamlight - 63% (Includes Insight Technology) Surefire - 22.2% Glock - 3.8% H&K - 2.6% Maglite - 1.8% Other - 2% Don't know - .5%
