Officer first aid for bleeding

Submitted by:
Det. Roger Knight, Spokane Co. (WA) SO

A helpful product developed and used by the military to save lives is available to law enforcement. The product is called Quik-Clot and comes in powder or sponge form. The product is intended to be used to stop severe bleeding. This product can be carried/applied by the individual officer should he or she suffer an injury that results in severe bleeding, such as a gunshot or cut.

Several recent articles indicate that officers bled to death after being shot or injured and medical aid was unavailable or arrived too late to save them. Quik-Clot can be carried and applied by the injured officer or a fellow officer. It has been used numerous times in Afghanistan and Iraq to save countless military personnel.
