Miss. officer held at gunpoint
By Amber Craig Mississippi Press MOSS POINT, Miss — Three people have been charged in connection with their roles in assaulting and holding a Moss Point police officer at gunpoint Tuesday afternoon, according to the Moss Point Police Department. Ricky Powell, 27, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, robbery, felony fleeing pursuit and two counts of possession of a firearm after a felony conviction, a department news release said. Shaun Keefe, 18, and Christopher Williams, 17, were charged with accessory after the fact for helping hide Powell inside his home before he was arrested, interim Police Chief Frederick Gaston said Wednesday. The last known address of all three suspects is 3528 Kimberly Drive in Moss Point. The three are being held at Moss Point Municipal Jail pending an initial court appearance. The incident began at 4:50 p.m. when a uniformed patrol officer, who was not named, began pursuing a 2004 Nissan Sentra on Jefferson Street near Main Street for a traffic violation. The pursuit reached 80 mph and ended at the Jackson County Civic Action Building at Jefferson Street, where the driver stopped and fled on foot to an area near his residence, officials said. The officer caught up with the suspect and "engaged in physical altercation" with the suspect, the release stated. At one point, the suspect removed the gun from the officer's holster, Gaston said, and held the officer at gunpoint before fleeing inside the house. No shots were fired in the incident, Gaston said. Powell was found hiding in the attic, the release stated. The officer's gun also was recovered inside the house. Additional Moss Point officers, as well as the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Pascagoula Police Department and the Jackson County Narcotics Task Force, responded to the incident. The incident lasted about 30 minutes and didn't require a massive search of the area for the suspect, Gaston said. "They (officers) knew where he went," Gaston said. The officer was treated and released from Singing River Hospital and is in good condition, the chief said. Copyright 2008 The Mississippi Press
