Smith & Wesson Hosts Joint Service Academy Combat Weapons Competition
U.S. Naval Academy Takes Top Honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 21, 2009) – Smith & Wesson Corp., announced that the company recently hosted the 2009 Joint Service Academy Combat Weapons Competition at the Hartford Gun Club in East Granby, Connecticut. During the annual competition, cadets from the U.S. Naval Academy, West Point Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy competed for both individual and team awards. After an intense but friendly competition, the U.S. Naval Academy stood victorious, outscoring the defending championship team from the West Point Academy. In the individual competition, Daniel McCawley of the U.S. Naval Academy was named the overall winner after narrowly defeating fellow teammate Michael Ross.
Featuring over 50 of the nation’s top cadets representing each of the three academies, the Joint Service Academy Combat Weapons Competition is designed to push competitors to their limits. The one-day competition tested each cadet’s endurance and concentration as they competed in ten-man teams through a variety of unique stages. Competing with pistols, shotguns and carbine rifles, each team demonstrated their skills through nine courses of fire using current military equipment. In the end, the U.S. Naval Academy took home the overall title with the West Point Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy finishing in second and third place respectively.

Each of the cadets who competed in this year’s match did an outstanding job representing their academy. They are a credit to these fine institutions and we are extremely appreciative of their role and service to our nation.”
Nichols continued, “I would also like to thank the various sponsors and individuals both at Smith & Wesson and at the Hartford Gun Club who worked so diligently to organize this match. At the conclusion of the event, an awards banquet was held with various prizes awarded to the cadets. In total, over $61,000 in prizes were awarded to the three academies. Match sponsors for the 2009 Joint Service Academy Combat Weapons Competition included Smith & Wesson, Aimpoint, Trijicon, Insight Technology, Otis Technology and SureFire along with various other companies in the shooting sports industry.
