Law Enforcement Associates unveils graffiti cam at ASIS International 2007

Covert Video Recording Unit Protects Communities by Enabling Law Enforcement to Proactively Apprehend and Convict Offenders of Graffiti-Related Crimes

Market Wire

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — ASIS INTERNATIONAL 2007 —  Law Enforcement Associates Corporation (LEA) (AMEX: AID), the largest U.S. developer and manufacturer of undercover surveillance equipment, today introduced the Graffiti Cam, the only U.S. manufactured covert surveillance solution that proactively notifies law enforcement of graffiti-related activity.

The Graffiti Cam is a high-resolution video recording unit concealed in an all-weather enclosure. When the recording unit is activated via graffiti-related motion, it sends text messages of the event in approximately six seconds to designated cell phones, as well as JPEG images of the event to designated e-mail addresses, enabling law enforcement to dispatch resources. Because the Graffiti Cam is packaged covertly in disguised housing, criminals aren't aware they are being recorded or that law enforcement has been notified, increasing the likelihood of arrest.

"The United States spends approximately $12 billion each year on graffiti remediation," said Paul Feldman, LEA's president and chief executive officer. "Our goal is to give that money back to the community by enabling arrests, securing opportunities for restitution and ultimately reducing graffiti-related crime."

The Graffiti Cam can capture up to 6,000 high-quality images at 0.1 seconds per frame to aid in the identification and conviction of offenders. It can record images as close as two feet or as far as a quarter-mile. The Graffiti Cam can also be moved between various trouble areas, increasing law enforcement's surveillance reach and control.

In addition to crimes of graffiti, the Graffiti Cam can be used to monitor for drug and gang related activity, vandalism and theft. By reducing the prevalence of such activity, the Graffiti Cam builds safer communities and helps restore a sense of pride among its members. If used as recommended, customers should see results within 30 to 45 days of implementation.

"The packaging and real-time notification of the Graffiti Cam is going to be a tremendous asset to the anti-gang efforts of law enforcement and the communities they serve," said LEA customer Dan Heinz, training consultant to the Department of Homeland Security. "The Graffiti Cam will allow for the dual capture of both the evidence and the perpetrator of the crime. I look forward to training officers on the product."

In Denver -- where at least $1 million is spent annually on graffiti remediation -- a Graffiti Task Force has been created to eliminate graffiti by 2010. The task force, which includes involvement from the Department of Safety and Denver Police Department (DPD), plans to employ eight Graffiti Cams in Denver's most severally tagged districts.

"The Graffiti Cam supports the task force's goal of utilizing police resources and promoting ownership at the local level," said Denver's Chief of Police Gerry Whitman.

"We're eagerly anticipating using the product to help us catch criminals in the act and hold them accountable for their crimes through strict penalties on restitution and community service," said DPD Commander Doug Stephens.

LEA will be showcasing this innovative new product at ASIS International, the largest security-related conference in the world, in Las Vegas, Sept. 24-27, at booth #2292.
