San Diego police to get live streaming video from schools

About 1,000 cameras will be live-streaming and accessible from patrol laptops

By PoliceOne Staff

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego police chief announced Monday during a news conference that the department will be able to monitor live streaming videos from their patrol car laptops of about 70 of the city’s campuses.

“We want to assure the community we are doing everything we can,” Chief William Lansdowne said.

The conference was announced to assess the community’s safety procedures in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school shooting that left 27 dead, including 20 children, according to North County Times.

About 1,000 cameras are keeping watch over hallways, lunchrooms, offices, and the exterior of 70 city campuses in an initiative planned long before the Connecticut violence, said San Diego Unified School District police Lt. Joe Florentino.

The school district should have cameras installed and available to city police at all its campuses within about six months, according to the article.
