Wash. man in custody after fatally shooting K-9

The Oregonian

BRUSH PRAIRIE, Wash. A Brush Prairie-area man shot and killed a Vancouver Police Department dog during a nearly four-hour standoff Tuesday, authorities said.

Sgt. Tim Bieber, a Clark County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said Ronald J. Chenette, 38, encountered the dog as it helped search a wooded area.

Southwest Washington Regional SWAT team members heard a gunshot and called the dog, but it didn't return. Another dog found Chenette and bit him when he fought. Bieber said Chenette was Tasered after a struggle and taken into custody about 5:30 p.m.

The slain dog was a German shepherd named Dakota and handled by Vancouver police Officer Roger Evans.

Chenette has an extensive criminal history, including a 1991 murder conviction, Bieber said. Chenette was taken to Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver for treatment, then was to be booked into the Clark County Jail.

There didn't appear to be anything serious that triggered Chenette's behavior, Bieber said. "Other than that he was possibly intoxicated and just out looking for trouble."
