Pa. police subdue armed man with Taser after assault

By Richard Robbins
Tribune-Review

Police used a Taser to subdue a Uniontown man they said assaulted a state trooper in Uniontown, state police said Tuesday.

The suspect was carrying a loaded pistol, police said.

Derrick Dwayne White 18, of Pershing Court, was lodged in Fayette County Prison in lieu of $15,000 straight cash bond. He has been charged with aggravated assault against a police officer, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, and possessing a stolen gun and drugs.

The incident yesterday at the corner of Jacob and Justin streets in Uniontown began as a traffic stop at 2:34 a.m. White assaulted Trooper John Weaver after Weaver and Trooper Nathan Lieberum stopped White's vehicle, police said.

"White exited the driver side of his vehicle and began to walk away," a police report said. "During the investigation, White continually reached in his right pocket with his right hand."

Lieberum grabbed White's hand and right pants pocket, authorities said. White pushed back and began to run through a nearby yard.

Lieberum tackled White twice, but White managed to escape, police said. Lieberum eventually used his Taser to subdue the suspect.

Tasers emit an electrical charge capable of incapacitating a person.

A loaded .45-caliber pistol was found in White's right pocket, police said. White also possessed what police called "an unidentified prescription drug."

White was arraigned before District Judge Dwight Shaner.
