Boston PD replaces unit command staff following pepper spray settlement

The Associated Press

BOSTON An elite police unit that shot pepper-spray pellets at revelers after a Red Sox win last fall has replaced a quarter of its officers, including the entire command staff. A college student died from one of the pellets.

Some of the officers of the mobile operations unit, including its supervisor, were transferred during the investigation into the death of 21-year-old Victoria Snelgrove, who was hit in the eye. Others have been on leave due to injuries suffered since the shooting.

On Monday, the city paid a $5.1 million settlement to Snelgrove's parents.

The roughly 50-member squad has been under scrutiny since Snelgrove died on Oct. 21 after Boston eliminated the New York Yankees and won the American League pennant. Only three officers shot the pepper pellet guns.

Results of an independent investigation into the incident will be released in coming weeks.
