Prognosis 'good' for Dallas SWAT officer shot during raid

By Tanya Eiserer
The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS - A Dallas SWAT team leader who was shot during an early-morning raid Wednesday continues to recover at a Dallas hospital, authorities said Friday.

"Lt. Carlton Marshall, who was shot in the neck, is in critical but stable condition and is still unable to speak, Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle said.

But Lt. Marshall is awake and able to write, he said.

"The prognosis is very good," Chief Kunkle said. "We're hoping for a complete recovery. He is still very, very, very seriously injured."

At a news conference Friday afternoon, flanked by Lt. Marshall's wife, father and other family members, Chief Kunkle read a statement on behalf of the family that thanked tactical-team doctors for saving Lt. Marshall's life, as well as doctors at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

"We have a long way to go, so please keep us in your prayers," the statement said.

Lt. Marshall's wife, Susan, is an Irving police officer, and his father, Don, is a former Dallas officer.

Authorities have said they were investigating a multimillion-dollar methamphetamine and cocaine distribution ring when Lt. Marshall was shot by a woman as he attempted to burst through a bedroom window.

"He leads and inspires the officers who work for him," Chief Kunkle said. "He is a very respected member of the department."
