Massachusetts Police Department Partners with Defibrillator Maker Zoll

Zoll AED Plus, maker of automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, announces that the Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Police Department has installed Zoll AEDs in every patrol car. Zoll also trained the department's officers in the use of AEDs.

The Chelmsford Police Department has one ZOLL AED Plus device in each of its 10 police cruisers, and additional devices in its stationhouse, its cellblock, and its training facility. Efforts to expand AED training and use have resulted in more units being placed in public venues, including the town hall, senior center, a golf course, skating rink, and most schools. In part because of such endeavors, Chelmsford was designated a Heart Safe Community by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The police department is also the training and educational resource for early defibrillation in Chelmsford. Chief Raymond G. McCusker chose the AED Plus for its ease of use and value. "When compared to similar devices, the AED Plus offered the best bang for the buck," he said.

This AED is designed for first responders. Its one-piece preconnected electrode includes a hand-placement locator that accurately measures CPR chest compressions, allowing real-time feedback on proper rate and depth. Audio feedback tells a rescuer, "Press harder," or "Good compressions."

"The beauty of having these devices in cruisers means that an officer with the AED Plus is more likely to be first on the scene," said McCusker. "Having an AED available sooner means there is a greater possibility of saving a life."
