Fallen K-9s honored at special Fla. cemetery

The K-9 at the center of the memorial used to wrench car doors open with his teeth, holding them in his mouth like a bone

By PoliceOne Staff

MAITLAND, Fla. — When Florida K-9 Alix died on Valentines Day after a decade with the Maitland Police Department, he was buried in a private ceremony at a cemetery dedicated to fallen department K-9s.

The cemetery was a city councilmember’s idea, according to the Orlando Sentinel. When a plot was secured next to the department’s new police station, the granite headstones of past fallen K-9s Sarge, Max, Sivil, and Bear were transferred over, along with some of their earthly remains.

According to the Sentinel story, Alix had “a knack for wrenching car doors open with his teeth. He would bite down on the handle, and a few times the black and tan German shepherd came away holding it in his mouth, like a bone.”

Alix’s headstone is at the center of the new memorial.
