Mass. police shoot man pointing pellet gun

The suspect called police, telling them his location and reporting that he was armed before hanging up

HINGHAM, Mass. — A Hingham man was in critical condition but expected to live after being shot twice by a police officer early Sunday morning, the Plymouth district attorney said Sunday evening.

Brian Middendorf, 33, allegedly pointed a black pellet gun resembling a semiautomatic weapon at Hingham police officers, prompting an officer to shoot, according to a statement from District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.

A person who said he was Middendorf called Hingham police just before 1:45 a.m. Sunday, telling them he was on Beal Street in Hingham with a handgun and then hung up, Cruz said.
