Dashboard cameras installed in 52 NJ police cars

The cameras cost $336,000, most of which was paid for through federal technology grants

The Star-Ledger

NEWARK, N.J. — Nearly two years after Newark police officials said dashboard cameras were being purchased for some of the department’s 400 cruisers, the devices have finally been installed.

"It’s certainly something that I feel is going to add to the transparency of the department," said Police Director Samuel DeMaio, who will formally announce Wednesday that the cameras are now in 52 cruisers. "On the flip side, I think it’s also a safety measure that protects our officers." Civil rights advocates say the cameras will help the department as it battles allegations of misconduct and a looming federal probe.

The cameras cost $336,000, most of which was paid for through federal technology grants obtained in 2008, DeMaio said. While the cameras have been installed in patrol and traffic cruisers, DeMaio is seeking additional grants to equip the rest of the department’s fleet.
