The EST approach was to use a frequency domain approach to collect the data instead of a time domain system. The resulting signal waveform is then converted to time domain using a Chirp-Z transform. The impulse radar transmits a pulse with a duration of several hundred picoseconds and an amplitude of many kilovolts per meter. Such a device is quite expensive, large and heavy, and has many limitations.
