Memphis Sheriff Recognized for 70 Percent Drop in Traffic Fatalities
DECATUR, IL - The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has recognized the Shelby County Sheriff's Office in Memphis, TN for lowering traffic deaths more than 70 percent in its county.
Shelby County's enforcement and public education efforts helped lead to a 71% decrease in traffic fatalities in 2005, a 14% decrease in traffic crash injuries and a 46% decrease in traffic crashes related to driving under the influence. Each year, traffic-related fatalities claim the lives of nearly 40,000 Americans.
More than 400 law enforcement agencies applied for the IACP Law Enforcement Challenge Awards. The program encourages agencies to meet goals related to traffic safety. The Memphis, Tennessee agency's award-winning performance earned them a Genesis handheld directional radar unit donated by Decatur Electronics, Inc.
Mark Hutchinson, Decatur Electronics' Southeast Region Sales Manager, presented the radar gun to the department at a dedication ceremony Aug. 23.
"We congratulate the Shelby County Sheriff's Office on their leading-edge initiatives to make our roads safer," said Hutchinson. "We care about traffic safety and about the countless officers who work to keep people safe every day."
