Bates Sponsors the 1st Annual Boots to Books 8K Run for Courage January 27, 2007 in Charlotte, North Carolina
Rockford, MI - The Boots to Books 8K Run for Courage sponsored by Bates footwear will take place on January 27, 2007 at Park Road Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. Proceeds from this race will benefit The Colonel Richard A Christie Memorial Fund which provides college funding to a deserving Marine.
The Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater Charlotte and Camp Lejeune's Marine Corps Community Services are working together to make this first annual 8K run a success. The Colonel Richard A Christie Memorial Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization serving as the funding vehicle for the Colonel Richard A Christie Memorial College Assistance Award. This annual award provides up to $10,000 to a former enlisted Marine leaving the Marine Corps in pursuit of a Bachelors Degree. The program pays a monthly stipend for up to 40 months directly to the Marine as long as he/she remains a full time student in good academic standing.
Each year's recipient is chosen based upon having demonstrated "exceptional courage and integrity in overcoming a significant obstacle". A board of Marine Corps officers and noncommissioned officers, all of whom had first-hand knowledge of Colonel Christie's example, selects the annual winner from all applicants.
