EAU CLAIRE, WI— Dealing with a mentally ill person poses unique and potentially fatal threats to police officers. They cannot assume that their normal day-to-day communication style will work when dealing with an individual suffering from mental illness.
On Wednesday, May 23, 2007 from 1:30 to 3:30pm, Dr. Dennis Conroy, Licensed Psychologist, will share insights learned from 30 years service on the St. Paul Police Department (recently retired) combined with 25 years of clinical experience as a Licensed Psychologist. This virtual training event will familiarize police officers with a variety of mental illnesses and assist them in more effectively dealing with the mentally ill in performing their duties.
Upon completion of the event officers will be able to: describe the concept of mental illness, describe a variety of chronic mental illnesses with symptoms of each and identify patterns of police involvement with the mentally ill. Officers will also learn to understand the mentally ill, learn the importance of planning, learn how to respond to the delusional, learn how to handle anger, learn things to avoid and much more. This information is being presented in a live virtual event delivered directly to each registered site via the telephone and internet.
Attend the virtual training event on May 23 to learn how to more effectively deal with the mentally ill and to avoid this very real threat to police officers. The cost is $295 for the live event and 30 views of the recording online. To learn more about the virtual event and to register, call 800 816-2640 or visit www.krm.com/letd.
