Marietta, Ga. Police Department Issues M3 Tactical Illuminator from Insight Tech Gear
Marietta Police Department issues new Glock 22 pistols with M3 tactical illuminator lights to all 134 officers.
The Marietta, Georgia Police Department has taken a big step forward in officer safety and firearms technology. Starting on September 13, 2004, all Marietta Police Officers will be issued a new Glock model 22 pistol (.40cal S&W) and an Insight Technology M3 tactical illuminator to be mounted on the Glock. Prior to field use, all officers are receiving extensive training in the use of the M3 light and the new Safariland 6280 series (level 3) holster that will secure the new pistol and weapon-mounted light. Training is taking place for the next two weeks at Georgia Power Plant Bowen range in Cartersville, Georgia. Additional training will take place for two weeks in October to include additional live fire / shoot-house training and separate simmunition training exercises.
The Marietta Police Department firearms staff has been extremely pleased with the improvement in low-light and no-light shooting scores by officers. The officers have also remarked how much more confident they are with the new system. The Marietta Police Department began using Glock pistols in 1988. The primary reason for adopting the new system is to solve the problem of illumination and identification of friends and suspects in low-light conditions. Secondly, most traditional low-light techniques required officers to learn a new grip, attempt to align their flashlight beam with the direction of the weapon’s muzzle, and retain their flashlight in a highly stressful situation. Weapons mounted lights have been in use by SWAT teams for some time, but the real world is showing that the patrol level officer has been encountering the situations that this system has been needed. Marietta Police Officers have been involved in four shootings in the last 18 months and all occurred in low light.
The MPD firearms training staff is confident that through proper and thorough training weapons-mounted lights can be practical and safe for all officers.
