L-3 Communications Acquires Mobile-Vision, Inc.; Leading Supplier of In-Vehicle Video Recording Systems for Law Enforcement
NEW YORK - L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced that it acquired Mobile-Vision, Inc. on April 12, 2005. The company will be renamed L-3 Communications Mobile-Vision, Inc. and is expected to be accretive to L-3 Communications' results for 2005.
Located in Boonton, New Jersey, L-3 Communications Mobile-Vision, Inc is a leading supplier of in-vehicle video recording systems for law enforcement agencies, with a product line that includes both analog and digital recording systems, plus associated peripherals. Currently, Mobile-Vision has an installed product base of over 50,000 systems for over 4,500 state and local law enforcement agencies.
"We are excited about the opportunities this acquisition presents as we strive to apply the latest technologies to benefit the law enforcement community, "said Louis W. Blanco, president of L-3 Communications Mobile-Vision, Inc. "As you well know, the recent fusion of video and data technologies allows us to provide law enforcement with powerful new tools unavailable only a few short years ago. As part of the L-3 family we fully anticipate to continue to provide the innovation that has made Mobile-Vision the leading provider of in-car video technology."
The Flashback™ system from L-3 Mobile-Vision introduced the use of solid-state compact flash memory to in-car digital video recording for a more reliable recording media that is virtually indestructible. With no moving parts, the Flashback DVR is able to sustain shock, vibration, and temperature extremes well beyond the capabilities of other in-car digital systems recording to DVD or hard drive. This maintenance-free system offers pre-event recording, TRACE, advanced MPEG4 compression, internal GPS and the automated collection of metadata. It provides excellent quality recordings from multiple camera and audio sources, yet it consumes very little power.
System components include the Nite-Watch™ camera, which provides optimal nighttime performance and L-3 Mobile-Vision's patent pending VoiceLink Plus® wireless microphone, which uses digital spread spectrum technology for clear, interference-free and automatic wireless communication. A new universal monitor console includes a 3.5-inch color LCD monitor, a speaker with adjustable volume, and backlit operational controls that duplicate those on the DVR, allowing the DVR to be secured in remote locations.
"With its excellent market position, solid customer relationships and large installed base, Mobile-Vision is an excellent fit with L-3's growing public safety and homeland security segments," said Frank C. Lanza, chairman and chief executive officer of L-3 Communications. "We are following through on our strategy to develop total solutions for communications and information fusing and recording for the first responder organizations of local municipalities and federal, state, county and civic agencies. Mobile-Vision, with its broad user base, will create new opportunities for L-3 as we expand in this area."
Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications is a leading provider of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems, secure communications systems, aircraft modernization, training and government services and is a merchant supplier of a broad array of high technology products.
