Working together gets easier for police

New radios let officers from different areas speak directly to each other

By S.K. BARDWELL, Houston Chronicle

First was the armed robbery, then came the cell phone call to the Brazoria County Sheriff's Department: A witness was following the robbers as they fled north on Texas 288.

As the suspects passed through Pearland, they noticed they were being followed and began shooting at the witness. They continued their flight up 288, but with sheriff's department and Pearland police officers in pursuit.

After colliding with a school bus, the two armed suspects ran into a large field inside the Houston city limits, where Houston police responded with patrol units, a canine handler and a helicopter.
