Intuition in Sexual Assault Investigations
In a sexual assault investigation the law enforcement investigator’s mental approach should be to determine if a crime was or wasn’t committed. One of the major aspects of determining if a crime was committed and by whom, is the law enforcement investigator’s ability to be intuitive at all times during the sexual assault investigation. Intuition is defined as “the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning…we shall allow our intuition to guide us.” If a Special Assault Unit investigator understands how his/her intuition is guiding them in their pursuit of establishing if a crime did or didn’t take place, then they have a gift which others will admire and may learn from. There are many reasons an investigator should follow their intuition, but most importantly knowing when that ‘gut feeling’ is accurate and meaningful. The investigators credibility as a law enforcement officer will be questioned if they fail to act upon their intuition. If the credibility and reliability of the investigator’s intuition is questionable then a sexual offender may be released back into the community and/or an innocent person can be sent to jail/prison for a crime he/she didn’t commit. In this video Lawrence W. Daly, Chief Sexual Assault Investigative Educator for the One Daly Corporation raises several issues surrounding the concerns of identification in a sexual assault investigation.
