La. officer injured on shooting range

The New Orleans Times-Picayune

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — A Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy suffered a minor injury when a weapon discharged during a training exercise in Plaquemines Parish on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Officer David Roddy, a 16-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg during the exercise, said Col. John Fortunato, JPSO spokesman.

Roddy and several other SWAT officers were firing onto the range in Myrtle Grove from inside an armored personnel carrier when a fragment struck him in the leg. He was taken to University Hospital where he was treated, Fortunato said.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m., said Maj. John Marie, a spokesman for the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office.

Several law enforcement agencies use the Plaquemines Parish facility for training because of its size.
