Research firm: Dash cam going HD

IMS Research estimates 20% growth for high-definition video cameras inside police cruisers over the next four years

By PoliceOne Staff

Your next dash cam might be HD, according to a UK research firm that says the trend is on the upswing.

IMS Research estimates 20% growth for high-definition video cameras inside police cruisers over the next four years, according to Security InfoWatch. The numbers come from the firm's latest report on mobile video surveillance, which predicts HD cameras will still make up less than 15 percent of the total market in the United States.

Right now only one system of HD video surveillance is designed for use inside police cruisers: The WatchGuard Video 4RE solution. IMS Research forecasts more vendors will roll out in-cruiser HD video systems in 2012 mostly due to the better-quality images they produce.

"As camera prices decline...the use of HD cameras will increasingly become a more viable option," Researcher Oliver Philippou said, though he cautioned that more storage space is also required — a potential issue for some departments that under certain state laws, may have to keep videos for a full 365 days when using them as evidence.
