DOJ proposes digital camera standards for police vehicles

WASHINGTON, DC — The Department of Justice is seeking comments on new standards for in-car digital video cameras. The new standards cover testing, rules of evidence, batteries and accessories. The deadline for comments is Jan. 31, 2011.

They seek to establish a minimum level of performance for systems to enhance officer safety and the effectiveness of audio/video evidence, according to the document.

The system will also have the option of incorporating a secondary video camera, according to GovernmentVideo.com. It shall have the capability of recording DME in an electronic file format for the storage that can be electronically transferred to an external device.

The Justice Programs Office released the following statement on December 15, 2010:

"The opportunity to provide comments on this voluntary standard is open to industry technical representatives, law enforcement agencies and organizations, research, development and scientific communities, and all other stakeholders and interested parties. Those individuals wishing to obtain and provide comments on the draft standard under consideration are directed to the following website: http://www.justnet.org."
