Harris County Sheriff’s Office – Largest In Texas – Employs Homeland Security Grants To Issue Quikclot® Hemostatic Agent

New QuikClot® TraumaPaks Will Allow Deputies to Stop Life-Threatening Bleeding When First on the Scene in Largely Rural & Highly Populated Area Surrounding Houston

HOUSTON, Tex., November 13, 2007- Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas announced the purchase of approximately 1,500 QuikClot® trauma kits from Z-Medica Corporation of Wallingford, Conn., that may help save the lives of both Deputies and civilians. The Sheriff’s Office has acquired the lifesaving QuikClot® brand hemostatic agent with the assistance of grants from the United States Department of Homeland Security. The purchase will provide Sheriff’s Deputies with another life-saving resource for both the Deputies and the citizens of Harris County. Sheriff Thomas will issue the Z-Medica TraumaPaks™ and other first aid medical supplies to all Field Operations and Court Security personnel, as well as, to selected Detention Command personnel. Sheriff Thomas is not attempting to replace emergency medical treatment provided by certified emergency medical personnel. Deputies are being trained to use QuikClot® to save a severely injured colleague or civilian in emergency situations involving severe, traumatic blood loss when medical assistance is not yet on scene, and the potential for loss of life is eminent.

“The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is the largest accredited Sheriff’s Office in the nation and we are constantly working to provide the best possible law enforcement services to our citizens,” said Sheriff Thomas. “The use of QuikClot® traumatic bleeding kits enhances the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to render potentially life-saving care prior to the arrival of emergency medical personnel. If we can save even one life and spare a family from suffering a needless tragedy, then QuikClot® will have proven its worth.”
