Hillborough County Sheriff’s Office Deploys New Cooler Generation Of Lifesaving QuikClot® Hemostat

One of the Nation’s Largest Sheriff’s Departments – First in Nation to Fully Deploy QuikClot® – Has Acquired 1000 Units of QuikClot ACS+™

WALLINGFORD, Conn., June 4, 2007 – Z-Medica Corporation (Z-Medica), a medical products company focused on innovative hemostatic nano-technologies, announced that the Hillsborough County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has renewed its supply of the rapid blood clotting agent QuikClot®, purchasing 1000 units of one of the newer versions of the product, QuikClot ASC+™. HCSO will also be adding another newer QuikClot product, QuikClot 1st Response™, which comes packaged in smaller quantities, five to a box. Z-Medica re-engineered the original QuikClot® to eliminate the possible generation of excessive heat in certain circumstances - its only potential side effect. QuikClot ACS+™ and QuikClot 1st Response™ give first responders the ability to save lives by stopping severe bleeding right at the scene of an incident. As the new products were being deployed, QuikClot® saved the life of an undercover Hillsborough County deputy who was shot during a drug bust. One of his colleagues applied his issued QuikClot® to the chest wound, stopping the bleeding.
In 2003, HCSO was the first among the largest law enforcement organizations in the nation to fully deploy QuikClot®. The department purchased 1200 units that were distributed to all of its deputies for inclusion in their first aid kits, and placement in all of its motor vehicles, marine units and facilities, including its jail and regional shooting range.
“With the acquisition of our newer generation products, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to demonstrate its leadership in making the latest lifesaving technologies available in its jurisdiction,” said Z-Medica CEO Raymond J. Huey.
Huey added that this leadership has encouraged many more law enforcement officials across the U.S. to adopt QuikClot® technology. It was first in use by all branches of the military in Iraq and Afghanistan and usage is growing among first responders and security organizations.
“Four years ago, we made a sound decision to equip our personnel with QuikClot®, one that has already paid off in terms of a number of lives saved,” said Sheriff David Gee of HCSO. “If paramedics can’t get to the scene fast enough, our deputies now have the capability of stopping even severe bleeding to save a life. The recent incident where our deputy’s life was saved by QuikClot® is the best example of why we remain committed to QuikClot® as an important tool for preserving the safety of our officers and all the civilians we serve.”
In 2004, Z-Medica created awards to recognize heroic use of QuikClot®. The Francis X. Hursey Award, named for the inventor of QuikClot®, is given annually to “the civilian first responder who best exemplifies the Z-Medica creed: The greatest privilege is to make a difference.” The 2005 Francis X. Hursey Award went to HCSO Deputy Daniel Johnson. Johnson used QuikClot® to stop the significant blood loss of an elderly man who had accidentally shot himself with a .44 magnum pistol, saving his life.
