Mo. city police sirens now feature vibrations

By Jaime Baranyai
The Springfield News-Leader

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — With modern-day drivers distracted by cell phones, iPods, kids in the back seat and more, Springfield Police have purchased some new sirens that send out vibrations in addition to sound.

The Rumblers were fitted in about two dozen cars, at a cost of about $400 each. But the department won't be getting any more this year because of budget constraints, Springfield Police Chief Lynn Rowe said.

Police say the Rumblers, installed before the city tightened its belt on spending, enhance the safety of citizens and police officers.
