Cops track down burglar with iFace technology

Burglary victim's quick thinking has given Victoria's latest crime-fighting weapon a flying start

VICTORIA, Canada — The homeowner's mobile phone photo of Simon Hansford, who was trying to steal a safe, led to his arrest and jailing. It was one of the success stories of Victoria Police's facial recognition system — and the force now wants to check every driver's licence photo.

A Ballarat homeowner had returned home for a lunch break to find Hansford in his house.

He took the picture on his phone and gave it to Victoria Police, which had been testing facial recognition technology (iFace).
