Video: Thousands pay tribute to fallen Santa Cruz officers

Friends, family and fellow officers paid tribute to the two Santa Cruz police detectives whose shooting deaths devastated the town

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Detective Sgt. Loran "Butch" Baker had a sense of humor but also a sense of compassion, once telling another officer to hand over his shirt to a trial witness who was dressed in ratty clothes so the man could look presentable in court.

Detective Elizabeth Butler was proud to be a female officer in a male-dominated profession, and passionately believed that crime victims should have a voice.

Those were some of the remembrances shared Thursday as thousands of friends, family and fellow officers paid tribute to the two Santa Cruz police detectives whose shooting deaths Feb. 26 devastated the beachfront town, which had never before lost an officer in the line of duty.
