Newark on pace to see
10-year low in homicides

Newark on pace to see<br> 10-year low in homicides NEWARK, N.J. — Halfway through Mayor Cory A. Booker's first term, homicides in 2008 are within reach of the 10-year low of 59, set in 2000. It's a vindication of sorts for the 39-year-old Booker, who rode into town on an anti-crime platform and immediately made some enemies by hiring McCarthy, an outsider, to run the police department.
