Police: Teen's death not gang or racially motivated

Student killed in Tenn. school shooting

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A school security camera may have captured portions of the shooting that killed a Central High School sophomore, authorities said today.
"There is some limited video of the activities that took place at the school," Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said.
He wouldn't say what the video shows, but said it is expected to have "a minimal impact" on the investigation.
Ryan McDonald, 15, died Thursday from a gunshot to the chest as students gathered in the school cafeteria before class began. Police say Jamar B. Siler, a 15-year-old freshman, pulled the trigger and walked away. He faces a charge of first-degree murder.
DeBusk said police know what led to the shooting but won't give details.
"We feel confident we know what the motive for the shooting was," he said. "The information was provided by the suspect during a conversation with an officer. I can say it had nothing to do with nor do we believe there was anything involved that was related to gangs or racial motivations."
McDonald was white, and Siler is black. The boys rode the same bus, and McDonald's family believes the trouble started with an argument over missing money. Police won't discuss that claim.
"There had been prior contact," DeBusk said. "That's all we can say."
He said investigators don't know yet how long the boys' dispute might have been brewing.
"We're trying to determine their history," he said. "We know there had been some recent contact between the two. We're trying to determine whether that recent contact was involved."
Officers arrived at the school on Jacksboro Pike in Fountain City within two minutes of the shooting, reported at 8:11 a.m., and arrested Siler four minutes later as he walked along Doughty Drive three blocks away.
Police said they found the gun on him - a small-caliber, semi-automatic pistol with at least four rounds still in the magazine. They won't say anything else about the gun or where it came from.
"We're working on where he got the gun," DeBusk said.
Siler had two previous arrests on minor charges but no history of violent offenses, authorities said. He remains at the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Service Center without bond.
Classes at the school resumed today with a heavy police presence and grief counselors on hand. Any students who didn't attend will receive an excused absence, Superintendent Jim McIntyre said.
